In Toronto, whether you call it male plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery for men, there’s a stereotype surrounding cosmetic surgery that it is only for women. However, more and more men are choosing to undergo cosmetic surgery.
According to Dr. Steinbrech there are mainly two reasons men choose to have cosmetic surgery. The first reason is they want to look good, which is understandable because it’s the reason the majority of people want surgery. The second reason is to stay competitive in the job market. Dr. Steinbrech further explains that in today’s job marketplace, it’s crucial to look younger and fit to increase your chances of climbing the corporate ladder. Cosmetic surgery institutions that are picking up on this trend are using these reasons to advertise to a male audience, and no doubt, it’s a strong marketing tool to capitalize on.
According to Dr. Steinbrech, there are four different types of male patients based on their reasons for wanting surgery and what they hope to get out of it. Let’s meet them:
The Male Model
This is the first type Dr. Steinbrech identifies. He states that these patients are typically average, good looking dudes that just want to enhance a few features about themselves. This usually involves some sort of jawline augmentation, elongation of the chin, and liposuction to show off the abs. Dr. Steinbrech says that after a guy undergoes some of these procedures, he feels like “suddenly he looks like a model on the cover of Vogue!”
The Body Builder
This is the second type that is identified. The doctor mentions that these patients usually undergo similar procedures as the first type, the male model, but the body builder’s want bigger chests, and glutes and well-defined muscles. He also points out that often with body-builder types they have to remove some fat from around the patient’s breasts due to steroid usage.
The CEO/Board Member
The third type that he identifies is the CEO/board member. He points out that these guys usually already have established careers and they feel confident and young, however they feel they don’t look the part. Dr. Steinbrech likes to give these patients something he calls the “Forbes Facelift”. This procedure consists of a necklift, eyelift, jawline re-contouring, and sometimes liposuction. He explains that he usually leaves some wrinkles because wrinkles promote trustworthiness and are often seen as sexy.
The Athletic Dad
The final type is known as the athletic dad and these are the only type of patients that don’t seek surgery to assist them in their career. With the increase of mothers wanting a “mommy makeover”after pregnancy, there is now “daddy do-overs” for fathers. These patients are typically in their 40s, married with some kids, and have gained a bit of weight over the years. These guys usually want to look like they did back in college or their early 20s. The usual procedure for them is a jawline re-contouring, Liposuction, and an eyelift.
